Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans...

It's been quite a few months since I last wrote a post here. What happened? Well, I had to deal with a severe case of obstructive sleep apnea. It was extreme enough that I opted for surgery at Stanford, combined with a series of follow-up procedures, with one of the leading sleep surgeons, Dr. Robert Riley (whom I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who has a severe case of OSA - not the run of the mill OSA that is so commonly over-diagnosed these days... surgery is worth considering only if you've got a big problem!). This was my second encounter with surgery for sleep apnea, the first being in 2001. This second phase of surgery has required a much longer recovery time than the first, involving a series of radio-frequency heat treatments to expand the airway, over many months. I am now vastly improved, nearly back to full function, and intend to return to blogging.

During this time of dealing with my health, I also decided to move on from my wonderful position at Langebio in Irapuato, Mexico, and in October I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area, living not far from the UC Berkeley campus. I am doing consulting, as well as serving as Chief Editor for Frontiers in Plant Science, writing, doing scholarly research, and continuing to try to advance the concept of iBiosphere. It's good to be back!
